The state of the global hop industry

Abstract

The global beer industry is experiencing pressure on many fronts, hop growers and suppliers included. After a sustained period of investment in hop acreage and supporting infrastructure in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, it is now undergoing a rapid contraction. Explore the origins of this downturn in hop production in the context of the latest supply and demand data alongside other factors weighing on the industry, including changes to plant protection regulations, new climate change legislation, rising costs of key input materials, and the outlook for new varieties. We’ll attempt to explain what this means for brewers amid increasing uncertainty in hop supply and the current oversupply situation.
