PANEL SESSIONS

LET’S TALK FRANKLY: DIVERSITY

All communities are inevitably diverse, and this includes an academic community like CAUTHE. Diversity offers the community contrasting views, new perspectives and opportunities to pick up better practices. Unfortunately, we are still grappling with systemic discrimination, including racism, sexism, and ageism. But fortunately, we all want to treat people with respect and sensitively. In this session, we will have three panellists with diverse backgrounds, including culture, linguistics, sexuality, gender and age. They will each briefly reflect on their scholarship experiences and tell us how they would like others to treat them. The A large part of the session will be a discussion with the audience. The two questions they will be asked are: 1) Can you tell us your experience as being a minority in your career? 2) Many persons who belong to dominant groups want to be sensitive to minorities. They may even feel fragile when interacting with persons like you. What advice would you give them?
