ANTARCTIC TOURISM WALK

Polar Pathways: Exploring Hobart’s Antarctic Heritage

While Hobart plays an important role in current national and international polar research, it also has many historical associations with the Antarctic and Southern Ocean. On this tour we walk the Hobart waterfront tracing the 19th century sealing and whaling industries, early voyages of exploration to the south – including those by Sir Douglas Mawson and Roald Amundsen - scientific expeditions and places of contemporary Antarctic tourism and education. Our walk takes a little over one hour and is at a relaxed pace.

COMING DOWN FOR AIR

Coming down for air – Tourism in Tasmania and the quiet pursuit of the extraordinary

Tourism in Tasmania has been built on big investments in nature, culture, food and drink but it is an extractive industry reliant on the integrity of place remaining intact. With a new strategy focused on positive impact, we find ourselves at the coalface of implementing ideas of regenerative, or at least sustainable, tourism in the cul-de-sac of the world - where two oceans meet with World Heritage wilderness, the cleanest air and oldest living culture.

On this tour we will trace the journey of tourism in Tasmania so far and consider the destination management challenges, including the MONA effect, Cruise ships, boutique food and drink and nature-based tourism. As we go, we will talk about the next big projects in the pipeline and explore the issues that come with promoting and managing tourism with positive impact.

Our walk takes a little over one hour and is at a relaxed pace.
